GAÏA CERAMICS WORKSHOP

"Each piece I create tells a story: that of an encounter between raw material, my hands, and the magic of fire."

GAÏA WORKSHOP

Ceramicist, PIGNAN (34)

Nathalie reveals how "the element of the unexpected and of magic", combined with her meticulous work with enamels, transforms her pieces into miniature landscapes to contemplate.

Tell us your story, how did your vocation come to you?

My encounter with ceramics was a revelation after years of exploring other mediums such as painting and jewelry making. What immediately captivated me was the direct contact with the clay, this living material that retains the memory of every gesture. Working with ceramics allowed me to reconnect with a slow and soothing rhythm, far from the hustle and bustle, where every step counts: shaping, firing, glazing, observing.

How would you describe your style, your artistic approach, in a few words?

My work reflects a constant search for balance between simplicity and complexity. The forms are often refined, allowing the magic of the crystals that adorn the surface to take center stage. I like my pieces to be both rooted in artisanal tradition and open to a contemporary interpretation, where design meets nature.

What themes or subjects inspire you most in your work?

Nature, the ocean, and travel deeply nourish my world. I seek to capture the fluidity of water, the raw beauty of landscapes, and the changing light on a surface. These influences blend with my taste for contemporary design and objects that invite contemplation.

How do you work?

Since September, I've been sharing a studio with a ceramicist friend, a warm and inspiring space where our ideas and skills intersect. At the same time, I'm building my own studio with my husband and friends, an exciting and symbolic adventure that will soon provide me with a tailor-made space to continue my artistic journey.

In my work, I primarily use two clays: stoneware and porcelain. Stoneware, robust and authentic, allows me to create pieces with organic and natural textures, while porcelain, fine and luminous, enhances the details and crystalline glazes that I so love. Each material offers me a unique palette of expression, a balance between the raw strength of the clay and the delicacy of the forms.

Each day in the studio is an adventure filled with discoveries and challenges. There's the profound joy when a piece emerges from the kiln with perfectly formed crystals, like a reward after hours of meticulous work. But there are also failures, crystals that don't develop, colors that disappoint. These unexpected events teach me patience and remind me that creation is always a dialogue with the elements.

Each object I create carries with it an element of uncertainty, spontaneous beauty, and poetry. My wish is that my decorative pieces invite those who discover them to take a moment to contemplate life in a crystallized form.

Do you have a particular technique, a specific expertise? Without revealing all your secrets, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

I specialize in decorative ceramics, with particular expertise in crystallization glazes. This unique technique involves creating crystals that form directly on the surface of the piece during high-temperature firing. Each firing is a complex alchemy of time, temperature, and glaze composition. The result is always unique: organic patterns unfold in crystalline arabesques, reminiscent of natural phenomena such as the formation of ice crystals. I love this element of the unexpected and the magical, where each piece becomes a miniature landscape to contemplate.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

Each day in the studio begins with a dialogue with the clay. There is the simple yet essential pleasure of preparing the material, of feeling beneath my hands the resistance of stoneware or the almost silky smoothness of porcelain. This daily routine is made up of moments of concentration, where every gesture counts, but also of surprises, because ceramics remains an unpredictable art.

One of the greatest joys of this profession is seeing a creation come to life in a client's hands. Receiving my first orders was a significant milestone, a precious validation of my work. More recently, I had the honor of being selected to join an art boutique this spring. These successes fuel my passion and motivate me to continually explore new creative avenues.

But this craft would be nothing without those little moments of magic: the satisfaction of taking a perfectly crystallized piece out of the kiln, the wonder at an unexpected shade of glaze, or simply the contemplation of the fruit of many hours of work. These moments give my practice its full meaning and are an invitation to continue exploring.

Do you have a message you'd like to share, or anything else you'd like to say?

Each piece I create tells a story: the story of an encounter between raw materials, my hands, and the magic of fire. What sets me apart is my constant search for poetry in the details. Through the delicate technique of crystallization glazes, I shape objects where crystals unfold like natural landscapes frozen in the earth.

My work is rooted in an authentic and sensory approach, inspired by nature, the ocean, and contemporary design. I love to create pieces that touch both the eyes and the heart, objects made to be contemplated, conveying beauty and emotion.

By choosing my pieces, you are adopting much more than a simple object: you are welcoming a part of a unique artisanal universe, crafted with passion and meticulous attention to detail.
