BÉRENGÈRE CHAMBOISSIER - FLOWER TIME WORKSHOP

"I leave a lot of room for the flower, it is it which dictates many things to me. By its shape, its softness, its color. Secondly, I also play with the engraving and/or the word that I choose which also has a fundamental place in my herbaria. I have to find a subtle balance between the two."

BÉRENGÈRE CHAMBOISSIER

BERENGERE CHAMBOISSIER

Floral creation artist, ROMAINVILLE (93)

Bérengère tells us her story, or how floral creation seemed obvious to her.

Tell us your story, how did your vocation come to you?

After studying art history and more than ten years working in the art market for artists, galleries and institutions, in 2020 I decided to retrain professionally in the world of floral creation which has always fascinated me. I trained and opened a stand at the Saint-Ouen flea market, it became my place of creation and a showcase for my work. In 2022, in order to refocus on my creation, I am changing location and setting up a workshop in my garden. My work mainly consists of creating contemporary herbaria. Collages made up of plants and old paper. To do this, I look for essences that I pick and put to press: the quest for the right color and the perfect shape. I work with original 19th century engravings that I find in flea markets and garage sales. I like to combine the nostalgia of old representations with the beauty of dried flowers to reveal new poetic worlds. I also have chosen words that I find in old books to complete this journey into the imagination.

How would you describe your style, your artistic approach in a few words?

I work with dried flowers which allow a lot of things. I started with bouquets, wreaths, suspensions, harmonies with ceramics etc... I now mainly work with pressed flowers in the form of herbarium-collages.
I am very influenced by the history of art in the field of plants. I create my herbaria with old engravings and old paper. The importance of the line, the shape of the plants, the balance of colors, everything is important. Above all, you have to tell a story.

What are the themes or subjects that inspire you the most in your work?

I leave a lot of room for the flower, it’s what dictates a lot of things to me. By its shape, its softness, its color. Secondly, I also play with engraving and/or the word that I choose which also has a fundamental place in my herbaria. I have to find a subtle balance between the two. Render all the beauty of the plant and reveal a whole little poetic universe.
I think that very literary and romantic themes inhabit me. Freedom, women, love, poetry, our connection with nature are themes that I like to work on.

How do you work?

I work in a workshop at the bottom of my garden. It's a very inspiring place and I'm lucky to be at the heart of my job: in nature that I can observe endlessly. I make the majority of my creations with plants that I grow and pick and dry or press myself.

Do you have a particular technique, a particular know-how? Without revealing all your secrets to us, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

There is something very empirical about working with plants. Each variety requires specific know-how in terms of cutting, drying, etc. We approach the plant with humility because each time, even if a protocol is in place, we must adapt to the plant.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

The days of independent creators are busy. We are the only masters on board and we must lead everything head-on! It's not always easy but we do what we love.
I try to divide my working time between the creation and production of pieces (which takes a lot of time) and with communication and marketing (photos, emails, managing networks, etc.).

A message to convey, anything else you would like to share?

Put flowers in your life! It is an inexhaustible source of beauty and joy, and we need it so much.
