MEET THE ARTIST

CÉCILE COLONNA

"My artwork allows me to be even more committed to the mission I have set for myself, by donating a portion of my royalties to an association for the protection of turtles and oceans."

CÉCILE COLONNA

painter, Bordeaux (33)

With the benefit of hindsight and maturity, Cécile recounts her return to her first love: art and decoration.

Tell us your story, how did your vocation come to you?

I have always been passionate about art. After college I was accepted to the Boulle school in Paris, but fear and my young age made me choose another path, today it is with more maturity that I return to my first loves: art and decoration.

How would you describe your style, your artistic approach, in a few words?

I spent a long time searching for my style, experimenting, copying often, and in my opinion, that's how you learn. But it's only very recently that I've found my contemporary style and decorative art.
I like clean, elegant and minimalist lines.

What themes or subjects inspire you most in your work?

The theme of my works is undoubtedly the tortoiseshell pattern, which is the common thread in my paintings.
It's a pattern I love; I find it chic, timeless, and adaptable in many ways.
My inspiration obviously comes from my totem animal: the turtle, and it's a way for me to pay homage to this majestic animal.

How do you work?

I work from home; it's where I feel most comfortable, even though my supplies and canvases are starting to take up more and more space. I experiment a lot, sketching my ideas in a notebook and creating mood boards for each collection.

Do you have a particular technique, a specific expertise? Without revealing all your secrets, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

I work with bio-based resin by layering thin coats, which allows me to obtain relief and light as well as transparency, to give the tortoiseshell pattern a more contemporary style.
I most often use warm colors like brown, ochre, and orange. But soon there will be new variations.
I have never seen techniques like mine before, and that is often the first feedback I get from the audience.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

Like 80% of artists, I have a day job alongside my painting. I try to find the right balance between my work in the medical field, painting, and my family life. It's not always easy to find time to paint, not to mention all the other aspects of being a self-employed artist: self-promotion, social media, administration... But I'm already proud of the work I've accomplished; I created everything myself—my image, my logo, my website, etc.
My dream, of course, would be to be able to live fully from my passion one day.

Do you have a message you'd like to share, or anything else you'd like to say?

Art, whatever its form, allows artists to convey messages, ideas, and demands that are unique to each individual.
For my part, my works allow me to be ever more committed to the mission I have given myself by donating a portion of the royalties from my work to an association for the protection of turtles and oceans that is close to my heart.
