KORIN LACQUER

work of the vegetable and European lacquer, Avene (34)

Korin introduces us to the Japanese technique of Rankaku: the inlaying of eggshells, which she combines with her work with vegetable lacquer.

Tell us your story, how did your vocation come to you?

One sleepless night I discovered the Japanese technique of rankaku (eggshell inlay) in a television report.

How would you describe your style, your artistic approach, in a few words?

Passionate, an artist at heart with an Asian touch, obsessed with eggshells…

What themes or subjects inspire you most in your work?

Intimate nature, emotional experience, the human element…

How do you work?

At the end of a dead-end road in the upper Hérault region lies my workshop.
I work with European vegetable lacquer, very often incorporating eggshells (quail, chicken, duck, goose). It's the Japanese rankaku technique, a long and meticulous process; on average, about thirty layers of sanded lacquer are needed to create a single piece.

Do you have a particular technique, a specific expertise? Without revealing all your secrets, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

I was trained by Asian masters in traditional vegetable lacquer techniques.
This apprenticeship allowed me to develop a contemporary approach to this very particular medium of lacquer, with the addition of other materials to make it more contemporary.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

A passionate and exciting profession, constraints inherent to the specific characteristics of lacquer, a collaboration with a classical music producer…

Do you have a message you'd like to share, or anything else you'd like to say?

Obsessed with lacquer, I enjoy creating decorative panels, furniture, jewelry, sculptures, portraits…
