MEET THE ARTIST

MONDAY WISH

"I miss the 'artisanal' and manual approach to my work. That's why collage, a technique combining cutting, assembly, and reflection on materials and colors... appeals to me because of its meditative power."

CAROLINE GOUILLAUD

Graphic designer and visual artist, Leucate (11)

The artist tells us how, after a career as a textile designer, she decided to refocus on a more "artisanal" and manual practice: collage then became the obvious choice for her.

Tell us your story, how did your vocation come to you?

After studying applied arts, I chose the path of textile design for about ten years. Following this experience, I turned to graphic design more generally.
Then, I began to miss the "artisanal" and manual approach of my craft. That's why collage, a technique combining cutting, assembling, and reflection on materials and colors, appealed to me because of its meditative power.

How would you describe your style, your artistic approach, in a few words?

The search for the right image, the care taken with the editing, and the combination of colors make each
A unique moment of creation. It's a work of composition.

What themes or subjects inspire you most in your work?

Women, travel, and the sweetness of nostalgia are my favorite themes.

How do you work?

I work in my light-filled office-studio, surrounded by a ton of magazines, old letters, fabrics and other papers with unique textures or colours.

Do you have a particular technique, a specific expertise? Without revealing all your secrets, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

My technique is developing a little more each day, but I would say that the patience for cutting and the fact of liking meticulous activities is a skill in itself.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

Daily life is about research and curiosity. The constraints... it's about knowing how to let myself be guided by the images that the available materials offer, rather than trying to find a specific image. The joys and successes, like for any creative person, come from seeing in someone's eyes that one of my collages touches them.
