PHANE TRIBOT LA SPIÈRE

ARTIST DESIGNER, MARSEILLE (13)

The artist designer tells us how her studies and her career made her aware of a reality that she is now committed to: the negative impact of “fast-deco”.

Tell us your story, how did your vocation come to you?

I studied at an industrial design school and today I realize the harmful impact of fast decor. In my practice, I revalue time and reflection to the detriment of over-production.

How would you describe your style, your artistic approach in a few words?

A practice built around classic tableware quickly leads me to break away from it, in order to develop my own language. This is how wood and ceramic meet to give birth to unique pieces of character, connected by the fold.

I like to build pieces that go against the industrial process, in this sense I impose manual work and complex shapes to prevent the possibility of making a machine work.

What are the themes or subjects that inspire you the most in your work?

I am inspired by the world of ceramics; enamels, firings, turning processes...
But also from what surrounds me, from meetings, from discussions of certain exhibitions or other designer practices that surprise me.

How do you work?

When I have an idea I like to write it down or draw it quickly somewhere (sometimes in the notes on my laptop) then I draw and do 3D. When I have to produce them, I juggle between two workshops; a ceramic workshop and a wood workshop located in the heart of Marseille.

Do you have a particular technique, a particular know-how? Without revealing all your secrets to us, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

I like to reinterpret glazing techniques. In my process, my pieces are enameled and fired and for certain pieces, the colors are handcrafted in order to regain the appearance of the enamel. By distancing myself from my pieces, I sometimes, when an enamel is particularly successful, photograph them and make prints like paintings.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

I organized an exhibition in Paris with two other artists on the theme of Dressing. In this one I made 3 handbags and a valet, which I renamed the Servente; one of my biggest items! I was very proud :)

A message to convey, something you would like to share?

I will soon be doing a shoot of my bags that you can admire on my social networks!
