the black waves
This series of black paintings engages in a dialogue with Majorelle's ultramarine blue. Simultaneously, Anaïs LF is working on her series of poetic mountains, dedicated to the Atlas Mountains and the world of Majorelle.
Black waves structure the smooth, glossy texture, forming ever-changing interlacing patterns composed of furrows. Like Soulages, it is an expression of black, as a “unique black,” with variations in texture: smooth, thick, calm, taut, or agitated. These curves capture or reject light, simultaneously giving rise to grayish blacks, brownish blacks, and deep blacks.
“I don’t paint black for black’s sake, but for the contrasts.
Next to black, white, brown, or even blue become more white, brown, and blue.
Anaïs's art remains, above all, a way of thinking about encounters as spaces of freedom. Indeed, her paintings are primarily a means of encounters involving giving, sharing, and reappropriation.
